Nursing Homes

A nursing home, also known as a skilled nursing facility, is a type of residence for seniors who require constant care and have significant problems with daily activities. The goal of care in a nursing home is to help the residents meet the daily needs. Due to the level of constant care needed, each nursing home in the United States which participates in Medicare or Medicaid is required to have a licensed practical nurse on duty 24 hours a day.

In a nursing home, residents typically share rooms and are served meals in a central location. Most nursing homes also provide residents with daily activities that provide physical and mental stimulation. With such a high level of constant care needed, the cost of a nursing home can be expensive.

When researching and deciding on a nursing home, make sure you tour the facility. On your tour, take note of the cleanliness. Find out how often housekeeping services are provided, and what is the response time when help is needed? Also, watch the residents. Are they busy and happy? Will there be activities for you to participate in? Find out what safety features are available at the home. Are there bars in the bathroom? How does a resident contact a staff member? Find out the staff to resident ratio also, since this can be a good indication of how much help you can expect.

Nursing homes are individually licensed by each state. Each state also inspects the nursing home in regular intervals. When you visit the nursing home, you can ask to see the latest inspection to view any issues. The facility should be clean and free of any unpleasant odors. The level of investment in a nursing home can be high, so take the time to make sure you decide correctly.
